  • The different types of anchoring for long-term installations in light soils, for long-term installations in solid soils and for temporary installations of conventional lathes.
  • Considerations to be taken into account when leveling a Pinacho ML Series conventional lathe.
  • Instructions for leveling a Pinacho ML Series lathe.

In our previous article, we talked about the importance of the correct anchoring of a Pinacho ML Series conventional lathe to the floor in the installation area of the machine tool.

Pinacho’s ML Series lathes are manual control lathes with electronic speed variator that allows selecting the required cutting speed at any time, achieving better surface finishes, optimizing tool consumption and improving machining performance.

The new ML models stand out for their precision and useful life, being versatile machines for both maintenance and production work.

Considerations when leveling a Pinacho ML Series conventional lathe?

To ensure the correct operation of a conventional lathe, precise leveling is essential. If we want to achieve the required turning tolerances and quality finishes without undesired vibrations, it is necessary to perform an adequate leveling of the machine. This procedure will also prevent premature wear of the slides and bed; therefore, it is advisable to perform this operation periodically.

Qualified personnel:

When operating conventional lathes, it is very important that operator and machine have the best conditions to obtain a result of optimum quality. On the one hand, the skill and expertise of the machine tool operator is essential, but it is also absolutely fundamental that the conventional lathe is correctly leveled, otherwise, no matter how good the operator’s skills are, the result will not be the desired one.

Correct illumination:

Also important is, in order to obtain good results, correct lighting. The ideal is to operate in an area well illuminated by natural daylight, although the use of adequate artificial lighting is also a good option, as long as it is homogeneous and intense, generating as little shadow as possible on the workspace.

Location considerations:

The perfect location for a conventional lathe is a warm, dry facility. The machine should be placed in an area where the operator has enough space to move freely around it, for easy accessibility and periodic adjustment and maintenance. It is also advisable that the lathe is installed outside or away from the passage areas of other personnel working in the same facilities.

Good anchorage is essential:

Vibration is detrimental to any type of lathe, whether it is a conventional lathe or a CNC lathe, as it can impact negatively on the operation of the machine and the results of the work on the parts. It is generally advisable to install the lathe on a concrete floor, however, any solid surface is good as long as the machine tool is properly anchored to the floor. Depending on the type of floor of your facility, this anchoring should be done according to the installation instructions, which may be for free or fixed positioning. In addition, when the installation of the conventional lathe is temporary, there is a type of anti-vibration positioning.

Maintenance is the key:

Like any machine, the lathe, because of its regular use, may suffer small malfunctions, so it is desirable a proper periodic maintenance, if what we want is to maintain good quality standards in the workpieces. Thanks to these revisions we will obtain precise tolerances in turning and we will achieve quality finishes. This routine maintenance will also prevent premature wear of the slides and bed.

How to level a conventional lathe?

Once we have correctly anchored a Pinacho ML Series lathe to the floor of the working facilities, we will proceed to its leveling, following a few simple but important steps.

Leveling Video

This is how to level a Pinacho  ML lathe, when the base is already in position:

  • Place two precision levels of 0.02 mm/m on the carriage, one in longitudinal position and the other in transverse position.
  • Place the slider (carriage) in the center of the bed and act on the tensioners (C, D) until the appropriate levels are obtained.
  • Repeat the operation at both sides of the bed, moving the carriage at the end and at the beginning and acting on the tensioners (adjusting devices).
  • Act on the tightening devices (C, D) until they exert pressure without changing the levelness.
  • Lock with the help of nuts and check the levelness again.
  • Verify that all tensioners are supported.
  • A complete periodical inspection is recommended.
